About Us
Basic Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS)
Basic Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS) was formed and registered in 1991 in Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu as a society for making voluntary services. Dr. C Chinnalagar the founder and secretary joining with other social activists formed the society with the purpose of uplifting the poor and marginalized people, irrespective of caste, creed, and sex. The society was developed as an NGO working with the mission of empowering rural communities to address their socio-economic problems on their own and through self-help efforts.
OBJECTIVES:
Addressing the social problems, poverty, and environmental degradation by involving the rural poor and marginalized to achieve development in the field of health and education, social welfare and protection, women and child development, agriculture and environment, livelihood, and human rights promotion.

Our Programs
Sustainable Agriculture
BIRDS enables and empowers small farmers to have a self-sufficient livelihood. They are trained by BIRDS to cultivate indigenous varieties of organic food products using low-inputs and renewable resources and to maintain the fertility of soils, and genetic diversity of production. Totally 129 farmers are involved in the last five years. More farmers are inclined to take up organic farming. BIRDS plans to train 500 farmers and make attempts in this regard.
Promotion of Basic Education
BIRDS runs a residential school at its training center, Vedasandur conducting classes I to VIII standard. The school was started six years ago responding to the problem of child labor and rehabilitating drop-out children. 60 children of low-income families and orphans are admitted every year. We provided free food, accommodation, uniform, books, and medical care. BIRDS consider it to include more children.
Green clubs for rural children
Groups of school-going children in the villages are organized as Green clubs in the villages of Dindigul (D). They are oriented to promote the local environment with conservation and eco-friendly practices in their daily life. We conducted events for tree plantation and maintain kitchen gardens to avoid plastic and polythene.

Vocational Training
Women are trained on social issues and develop their villages. More than 200 women are trained every year with capacity building training development of perspectives increases their freedom, strengthens their social rights, and contributes to human development.09-Dec-2022
Micro Credit
Economics activities are initiated by the SHG women for Income Generation. BIRDS organized loans to members through banks and institutions. Nearly 200 members are helped every year. The loans help them to attain higher economic standards with asset creation and securing their daily lives.

Covid-19 support
Considering the miserable conditions of the people, particularly the wage workers who have lost their jobs during the prolonged lockdown. BIRDS made efforts to mitigate their woes through relief activities. It distributed 21000 food packets in total in and around Vedasandur. We distributed food to more than 700 families for 15 days. Raw food materials were distributed to 350 families to meet their needs for one week.
BIRDS is making efforts to help the affected people in three ways.
• Relief to meet the needs for food
• Educational support to children including nutrition
• Livelihood support to those who lost jobs
